Another kid photo shoot

Can I just tell you HOW IMPOSSIBLE it is to get a 2 year old to cooperate? I finally had the kids climb on top of the swing set so that at least Kendall was contained! We had some pretty funny moments though...

Here are the latest attempts....

Easier without Kendall!

Jenna held Kendall's head so he would be facing the right direction

Kendall heard the neighbor's dog and so decided he was a dog too

The kids joined in and the dog went crazy. Kendall finally cooperated while the other kids weren't! Go figure!!!

Not too bad (the shot on top of the swing set)....Kendall being his natural self...a monkey.

Julia presented her "I Believe" paper in class

Julia called me today after her Honor's English class. She said that the class presented their "I Believe" papers as a speach today. She said that her teacher cried during hers...Julia said that she almost cried too because the spirit was so strong. Julia doesn't cry often. She is solid like a rock...like my Mom. Me, I cry easily. I cry during Hallmark and Folgers commercials.

Training for a new sport

I could hear their giggles echo up to the main level. I had to go down and see what was going on.

There was Kerst and Kendall having a friendly game of of air hockey. Kendall could barely reach the table by standing on his tippy toes. Kendall LOVED collecting the pucks that slipped into his goal and landed right in front of him in the little pocket. He would squeal with delight.
Dad decided to take on the defending champion...

Microwaving

John installed the microwave on Saturday! We (I mean John) still need to build a false cabinet above the microwave. It is SO nice to have everything that belongs in the kitchen IN the kitchen! Thanks John!!!

Re-evaluation

I've had several experiences in the last couple of weeks to step back and re-evaluate.

Experience #1

We ran into one of John's older brother's childhood best friend, Scott L and his sweet wife Toni, at a stake temple day this past Spring. It was a miracle in itself that we crossed paths that day. We were able to hook big brother Bruce up with Scott after many years. We received word mid-August that Toni was diagnosed with kidney cancer at the beginning of August. The cancer spread quickly. She passed away September 11. I was able to attend her funeral. Her 10 children stood up and shared experiences that they will always remember. She inspired me to want to be a better mom...a better person all around. It was touching to see so many family and friends come out to celebrate her life. She was truly an amazing woman.

Experience #2

Standard's Night held by our Stake (where Julia sang a duet) was another moment that made me re-evaluate. One of the speakers gave the audience a test. He asked the kids to evaluate their parents and the parents to evaluate their kids.

Questions for the teenagers to evaluate their parents:

Are you doing daily family scripture study, daily family prayer, weekly family home evening and eating dinner as a family?

He then asked the parents to evaluate their teenagers. The questions were taken from the Strength of Youth Pamphlet regarding the Family.

Here are the questions focused toward the youth (but apply to the adults too)

Do they build a happy home (cheerful, helpful, considerate), are they peacemakers? Do they honor you? Do they help around the house? Participate in family activities? Do they strengthen their relationships with their siblings?

He then proceeded to tell the story of James Kirkwood. He was an 11 year old boy that helped his widowed mother and and 3 brothers climb over Rocky Ridge. He gave his life to save his younger brother. The speaker tied this to various personal experiences he had growing up when his older brother protected him from a school bully, etc. He knew that his brother would have given his life for him. He then asked the youth how they rated on the "test" and asked the questions again.

That made me pause and think...

Experience #3

Has not happened yet, but will. I am looking forward to General Conference. This happens twice a year. I remember some time back that my mom mentioned that it is during General Conference that she comes up with her "New Year's Resolution".... she and my dad do their resolutions twice a year. In October and in April.

Jaley's Marathon

You read that right! Jaley is running a marathon! Progressively, that is. She has the MOST AMAZING gym teacher at school. He has motivated his entire class to run a marathon during the semester (it is also a fundraiser for the Special Olympics). Twice a week the kids have a run day. They are able to run for 25 minutes. Jaley logs in 2 1/2 miles each run day.

Today Kendall and I joined Jaley and we were able to log our miles onto her record sheet. It was really fun to watch her lap us a few times and see her interacting with her friends.

I'm proud of that girl!

I Believe ---- Julia

Moments like these just make my heart swell with JOY.

Julia is an amazing writer; I love reading her papers. In her Honor's English class she has an assignment to write a paper titled "I Believe".

Here is just a glimpse of my JOY.... She is a living, walking example of what she believes. She is not afraid to share her beliefs. She is proud to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

I Believe

By Julia

“Julia, the key’s still not coming out!” The exasperated words escape my mother’s lips as I look up at her guiltily. Her normally smooth face is stained with worry and frustration as she constantly tugs at the Jeep key that was crammed into the Honda’s ignition. My parents had just switched cars at my Dad’s work, and after my Father had left the parking lot in the blue Toyota, I grabbed the keys from my Mother’s hands and ran to the car. Being the implausibly curious five-year-old that I was, I quickly shoved the largest key I could get my fingers on into the ignition. However, I had just shoved the key for our Jeep into a car meant for a much smaller key. Still tugging and pulling, my Mother gave up on the seemingly impossible situation, and let her tired hand fall from the large, black key.

Seeing my Mother’s downtrodden expression, I recalled my Sunday School teacher telling me that God will always be there for us, we just have to ask for His help. I suggested a prayer to my Mom, who half smiled and softly whispered, “Why don’t you say it”

As the sun was setting right behind the green Honda, I took up my well practiced position of prayer. I paused for a quick second to look up at my Mother, who was waiting patiently for me to begin…so I did.

I started by humbly saying, “Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for this day.” I peeked at my Mom again to make sure that I was doing it right. I apparently was, so I continued by praying, “Please make Mommy happy. Oh, and please send me something to drink because I’m really thirsty. Amen.”

I heard my Mother’s soft “Amen” beside me, and when I looked up at her, she was looking at me in wonder, with a bemused smile painted on her now amused face. Probably because of the fact that instead of praying for a way home, I prayed for a drink of water.

I strongly believe in the power of prayer. I believe that God really hears us when we call to Him, and that He answers ever single one of our prayers. Even though He may not answer them the way that we may expect or desire, I still believe that He answers them. God heard me that cool, autumn evening ten years ago, and I still remember dancing around the large, abandoned parking lot, and catching water to drink in the empty tennis cans my dad had in his backseat.

I know there are plenty of people that would jump at the opportunity to crush my faith, and tell me it was only by chance it rained while my Mom and I were stranded in a lonesome parking lot, but I’d still believe God heard me that day, and will hear me whenever I pray to Him. I’d still believe, and I always will.

(Editor's side note: This experience still humbles me and brings tears to my eyes. A child's faith and prayers is so profound. John and I swapped cars at John's work just as everyone had cleared out for the day. We didn't have cell phones. All doors to the building were locked. It was a small company out in the middle of almost nowhere. Yes, the key was stuck in the ignition. Julia offered a sweet simple prayer. I remember thinking after saying "Amen"...why not pray to start the car? Water? Where? I had no water bottles. There weren't any functioning water spigots outside the building. And then the rain came. Out of NO WHERE. There were no clouds in the sky... The faith of my daughter was a truly humbling experience for me. )

Animal Crackers in my...

Kendall found some animal crackers and came up to me and said, "Whaz dat (what's that)?"

I replied, "An elephant."

"Hhhmmm bye bye" (Hhhmmm is his elephant sound with his head moving upward as if he is an elephant). He then proceeded to eat the elephant cracker.

I speak English, Kendall speaks...

I was reflecting on Kendall's development of speech. He had a difficult start having been born 2 months early. I knew language would be a hurdle we would have to be patient with. We had plenty of experience with Kerst on this since he too was a preemie.

Kendall has made huge strides in his language development...although we are still playing catch up. His main source of communication has been sign language. Once he assimilates a word into "his" language, the sign tends to drop.

So, what does Kendall speak? I realized that he uses more types of words than others, so I classify Kendall's language as being Onomatopoeiaeeze (onomatopieia is using a word or groups of words to imitate a sound).

Interpreting for Kendall:
weee - park
Psss - wet diaper
Vrmmm - car
chu chu chu - train
neigh - horse
mooo - cow
arf - dog
mouwuh - cat
ouwww - wolf
sssss -snake
snorting sound - pig
(tons more animals!)

Three free BYU football t-shirts? Yes, please.

Three free BYU football t-shirts? Yes, please.

Thought I'd give it a try...plus this site is part of the donate to NieNie (a blog I enjoy reading; she and her husband were in a private plane crash). Her sister keeps the blogging community up to date with her progress.

Tile backsplash...maybe something like this

I was thinking of doing something along these lines for our tile backsplash. I like the design...just not the price for the accent piece...plus they won't get any in until end of October. I have looked at another place and found something similar that is cheaper and in stock.

I liked seeing the entire idea on displayed on a board so thought I'd post it. I like the pinwheel look of the pattern. I wouldn't do the top trim piece, plus we don't have such a huge space between the cabinet and the countertop.

I'm not surprised...Jenna

Last night was parent/teacher conferences (student led conferences). Jenna's science teacher pulled me aside and told me that she has been very impressed with Jenna's example.

She went on to explain one example:

Last Friday was an egg hit activity that involved Jenna's entire team of students (150 at least). Each group of 3-4 students wrapped up an egg in some kind of protective container and sent it through various impact tests. When the activity was over, the entire practice football field was covered with trash and debris.

Jenna, along with 4 other girls, stayed behind to clean up the mess without being asked. The teacher was very moved by her willingness to serve.

I'm not surprised. That's our Jenna!

You're collecting WHAT?

I wasn't sure if I heard him right. "Can you say it again?"

"Mom, my teacher wants us to bring in Cannibals"

Kerst must have seen the bewildered look on my face so he explained further.

"If we get 222 Cannibals then we get to have an aquarium in our classroom."

What is he learning in school? I know they are getting ready to study plants; he just went on a field trip to the Denver Botanical Gardens. What field trip would they go on while they study cannibals and aquariums?

He went to the pantry and opened it up. "These" he said and pointed.

Oh. Now I see. Campbell's Soup Labels. Phew.

They have got to be related!

I was cracking up when I saw how this photo of Kendall came out. I was blindly aiming the camera at Kendall while I was holding the cloth on his mouth after he tripped yesterday. It reminded me of one of his siblings. I think they are related! They have the same "grouchy eyebrows" as we call them.

What do you think?
Kendall

Julia

Jenna took this photo while the Young Women gave the 4th year hiking girls their first shampoo conditioning treatment in 4 days...after a long 25 mile hike in the mountains! Julia was tired and not thrilled about having a camera in her face. This is one of my favorite photos!

Kitchen Crown Molding is done!

John worked hard this weekend and completed the crown molding in the kitchen (we still need to do the pantry and the entertainment center...). We also need to figure out what we are going to do with the back splash. It's getting there!!!

We have decided to create a false cabinet to go under the cabinet that is too short (microwave cabinet). We need to order a false door; John will do the rest. He is planning on venting it to the outside of the house; this will be good for the finish on the cabinets. He's amazing! Right now the microwave is in the dining room on the long table.
Here's the wall above the dishwasher. Finished
Here is a close-up of the crown molding with the rope (RIB 8) detail. John was very precise with the cuts. It looks like the rope is continuous even at the corners!
John also installed light molding that goes under the cabinet. He is planning on installing lights under the cabinets. This molding will help hide the fixture. So...what did I do this weekend? Nothing compared to John!

Julia Homecoming 2008

Julia decided last minute to go ahead and go to the Homecoming Dance...long story.

She said she would have really enjoyed the evening even more if she and her friend, Blakelee, drove around in the pink limousine all night. Yep! They had a pink limo! Blakelee's Dad was the chauffeur. It is for a new store Blakelee's grandpa is opening out here in the area. Sweet and Sassy. It is a party place for girls to go have their hair done. It sounds like a scale up from the Libby Lou we had in IL.

They went out to eat in the limo afterwards. Typical Julia, she came home wearing some of her food ;o)

She had fun taking her "typical" pictures.

Julia sings a duet at Stake Standard's Night

Julia sang one of my favorite Hymns, I Know That My Redeemer Lives, at the stake standard's night last night. She sang with her friend Natalie S. It was beautiful.

Here is a video of them practicing.

Oops he did it again...

Yep. Kendall fell AGAIN. He hit his mouth and teeth AGAIN while running in the kitchen. Just when his teeth were turning white after the first incident (actually second; the first one was in January)! Guess we might be visiting the dentist sooner than his 3 month follow-up ... Poor kiddo.

This time he allowed me to put pressure on his lip and teeth to stop the bleeding faster. I had him watch Dora the Explorer while I held the wash cloth with ice against his lip. It was fun to hear him try to answer Dora's questions with the cloth against his face.

We will see how he does tomorrow. I wonder if he will look like a "Who" (from the Grinch who stole Christmas)...again. sigh...

Julia's Women Select Choir Group sings for Homecoming

Julia's 12 voice Women's Select School Choir (not Enchords...still working on that group) sang the National Anthem at the Homecoming Pep Rally and at the Homecoming Game. They sounded wonderful!

My Lil' Bro...Top 40 under 40 in UT

My sister-in-law proudly informed us about some great news about my big little brother, Reed. He was listed as "top 40 under 40" in the Utah Valley Business Magazine. We are pretty proud of him! http://www.uvmag.com/fallbiz08/30_31.htm (Reed is the second one on the left...in the white shirt with the awesome haircut by my sister Kelly)

Here is the rundown:

My sister-in-law had e-mailed us back in July of this year to share our prediction of what Reed would "most likely to..." (you know, like back in high school, only now.)...without telling us why. She said it was a secret. Now we know! It was for the magazine article, but it ended up that the magazine didn't use that piece or angle...maybe they thought we were ALL crazy.

Here is why:

This is the e-mail thread that we sent in response to Brooke's request:

I started out saying:
"I'll have to think about it....
1. One thing I can think of is that he is most likely to invent a board game/card game line that only he wins.
2. He is most likely to be the only name on a star representing Candid Camera on Hollywood Walk of Fame for starring as the best prankster who can keep a straight face and be super convincing. This talent started at a very young age and only has improved (if that is the right word) with time.
3. He is most likely to convince the Board Members over Utah Lake to change the lake name to Lake Reed.
Corin
I know there's a lot more...looking forward to hearing what you have."

Shannon replied to all with:
"The board game one is PERFECT!"

Kelly replied to all of us with:
"1. Most likely to play barbies with you in the back of a station wagon.
2. Most likely to make a game really fun, even when you are losing.
3. Most likely to wear loud pajama pant if his underwear can't have bright yellow smiley"

Julianne jumped in with this reply to all:
"Am I too late?
1. Most likely to be a politician
2. Most likely to do stand-up comedy
3. Most likely to run a town"

I replied to all (in response to Julianne's reply):
"At first I thought the last one said "Most likely to be run out of town"...that might be fitting after a good round of HIS teasing."

Julia's Tribute to Aunt Kelly

Julia is in a speech class this semester and has a 99% in the class (I don't know where she is missing the 1%...I guess the teacher doesn't want her students to be over confident in public speaking!) She has a weekly speech to give.

This week the assignment was to pay tribute to someone. I thought this was very sweet...

A. I’m really proud to be the niece of a woman that has more shoes than a department store,
more talents than Barbie (Editor's side note: you know, all of those Barbie Dolls...she's a doctor, nurse, teacher, Olympic ice skater, etc), and can also be found under the hood of her own car.

B. Today, I am here to pay tribute to my Aunt, Kelly A. I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know Kelly, but I got to spend a lot of time with her and my Uncle Mike this past summer and discovered how amazing both of them are.

(Photos taken by Kelly...with the use of a tripod...yes she is amazing)

C. Kelly is my mother’s younger sister, and has a twin named Shannon.

She’s very talented with hair, and currently works at B. L. My Aunt also loves to document her life through beautiful photography.

D. A few of the reasons that I admire Kelly is because she is exceptionally cheerful and positive, selfless, compassionate, persistent, and talented in many ways.

II.

A. One of her most admirable traits is her selflessness. Kelly is always willing to give of herself before she gives to herself.

1. For example, Kelly and Mike were selfless enough to allow me to stay at their place for a couple of weeks over the summer and look after me. Hopefully I wasn’t that much of a burden, but it was still really nice of them to give of their time and space for their niece.

2. Kelly also had to undergo back surgery even though she is still really young.

This made it a lot harder for her to cut hair for a while, but she was still willing to cut people’s hair when they really needed it. Even prior to the surgery, my Aunt endured a lot of pain while cutting hair. Despite the pain, she often dedicated her time and talents to helping out many young girls in my church youth group by cutting their hair for free without any form of compensation. Her willingness to provide a service for people she hardly knows with no self gratification clearly shows her pure selflessness.

2. There was also one time when my uncle Mike gave my aunt some money to help with her expenses. But she saw my grandpa Price in need, and offered her own money to help him instead of using it for herself.

(Editor's side note: There is more to the story...just not enough time in a 3 minute speech to hit everything. My parents were in the process of a HUGE move from KS to UT. Kelly was there to help. Kelly knew that the move would be a huge expense and an even larger emotional change for my parents. Mike gave Kelly twenty dollars to help cover her expenses. Kelly gave the money to my dad to help cover the moving expenses ie. to help cover one of the 4 trailers used to move my dad's workshop to UT... two-thirds of one trailer was used for my mom's stuff. My dad was touched by her love and generosity. He still has that twenty dollar bill...and the mascara stains on his white tie from her wedding...)

C. Aside from her demonstrated patience and positive attitude, Kelly also is a great example to me of how to be compassionate.

1. She demonstrates this in many ways, but one of my favorite examples is between her and my uncle Mike’s sister, Sandra.

a. A while back, Sandra was in a tragic sledding accident that left her handicapped and unable to do many things for herself. She has to get from place to place in a wheelchair, and can’t use her hands very effectively.

b. Sandra often requires somebody else to do things that she cannot do herself, and when she needs something, Kelly makes sure that Sandra knows that she’s there for her. Kelly gives a lot of her time towards Sandra, demonstrating her kindness and empathy.

(Editor's side note: Kelly was at Sandra's side days on end during the difficult time after the sledding on Christmas Eve. Kelly will answer calls in the middle of the night to go over to help Sandra with simple tasks that Sandra cannot do on her own...they live 6-8 minutes away).

2. Kelly is also always giving of her time to other people who may need it. She is a very talented hair stylist, and her hair cutting services are highly desired. One of her senior citizen clients, named Melba, recently told Kelly that she was unable to leave her home (Housebound). Since Kelly is so generous, she drives to Melba’s house to style her hair every week. Since Melba can’t get out to visit other people, not only does she really appreciate the marvelous hair style, but is also extremely grateful for the social time that Kelly spends with her every week.

III.

A. All in all, my Aunt Kelly is a wonderful example to me, and like my big sister that I never had. She demonstrates to me how important it is to be compassionate, selfless, persistent, and to be optimistic.

B. Without Kelly Anderson, I wouldn’t be as optimistic about things and I would definitely not be the same person that I am today.

C. And that’s why I’m here to pay tribute to my Aunt Kelly.
