Tumbleweeds - memories of Bama

A picture of my grandmother holding the tumbleweed she received from
my Dad one year for Christmas.  He rescued it while moving from TX
to CA (military).  She kept this tumbleweed in her basement
for years.  This picture was displayed on a board at her memorial.
I was thrilled to see it there - I had never seen it before!

I was chatting with my aunt at the luncheon we attended after Bama's interment.   We were remembering Bama - we brought up our memories of her basement and all of the treasures.   I told her there was a tumbleweed in the basement on the top shelf from TX (I don't know all of the details of how she rescued the tumbleweed, etc - I should find out!).   My aunt told me that she didn't throw anything away and believed the tumbleweed was in a box in the basement.

When I arrived at the memorial service that night, my aunt gave me the box that contained this tumbleweed.   It was perfect .... I had written about it in my eulogy.   I took it up to the stand before the memorial service and pulled it out to share during that memory.

A part of my eulogy:

Grandma was sentimental.   She kept everything.   It was sweet to walk into her bathroom and see the wood boot I carved in 7th grade, a wooden mirror one of my brothers made hanging in her hallway, and a Popsicle stick project hanging from her kitchen cabinet nob that one of my kids made.   She even had a hand written contract hanging in plastic on her filing cabinets in the basement that my Dad made his sister sign when she was a little girl promising that she would never move out.   I remember going into her basement and finding dresses and hats from various special occasions along with flowers in her refrigerator that she saved from my parent’s wedding, my aunt’s wedding and uncle’s wedding.   She also had a small box in the basement that had contained her wedding ring and another box that contained letters the she and Grandpa wrote to each other.   She even had a tumble weed on the top shelf that my dad gave her for Christmas one year - my dad had rescued it from the road while traveling in Texas back in 1970 (or maybe a year or two earlier).   It was magical in her basement.   Oh, the memories and treasures it contained!

I brought the tumbleweed home with me.   I sprayed it and it now sits on top of our family memory tree ... a perfect place for it - as she played a major role in our childhood memories!

I did find out more about the tumbleweed.  Here is what my Mom shared:

Dad and I left Laughlin AFB in Del Rio Texas, heading to Mather AFB near Rancho Cordova, California at the end of March, 1970.   Dad now had his International Harvester 3/4 ton pickup truck with a camper hood over the bed of the truck.   As we were driving along in Western Texas this tumble weed tumbled across the road.   Dad pulled over and chased it down and put it in the back of his pickup truck, a gift for his Mom.   We proceeded to Modesto California where we stayed over General Conference Weekend with Elder Stephen's parents (one of the missionaries that taught and baptised us).  Elder Stephens had given us some things to bring to them on our way to next training station.   While visiting them, they introduced us to Food Storage and sitting for hours in front of the TV watching General Conference.   We proceeded to our home in Rancho Cordova on Crawford Way.   While stationed there for Navigators School, we adopted Sean, saw San Francisco, Dad got his navigators wings, Mom and and his sister came out for a visit.   This is the time she went along with us to every event the church had going....even camping in the mountains just east of where we were living.   It was her first taste of the church.   When she got back to Franklin Park, she asked Dad to take her to church and the rest is history.   In December of 1970, we traveled in the truck to Chicago via the southern route.   Our truck broke down in the middle of the night in a snowstorm, in the mountains just outside of Flagstaff, Arizona, the home of Elder McEuen's parents (the other missionary).   They rescued us and we stayed with them for several days while waiting for our truck to be repaired.   Sean was just a little fellow, 4 months old enduring this cross country trip.   By the time we got to Chicago, the poor little fellow had a bad cold.   Naturally I was worried, his first cold! I was a new, inexperienced   mother and pregnant now with Corin.   We made it just in time for Christmas.   I took this famous picture of Mom holding the tumble weed.   It captured the moment she opened this most unusual Christmas gift from her wonderful son, Richard.

Twas the Night Before Christmas ... read by the grandparents

Four years ago I had all 3 sets of grandparents for my children record themselves reading "Twas the Night Before Christmas". It was so sweet to hear the voices of my Bama and Papa (their great grandparents) read to my children tonight as we wrapped up our Christmas Eve traditions.

I made a recording that made it appear that all 6 grandparents were reading the book. You can view it here.  Our favorite part ... the ending when they all wish the grandkids a "Happy Christmas to all and to all a goodnight". I put the recording to pictures I took of the boys while holding the book back in 2009.

Though miles and now mortality separate us, it is comforting to know we can remember and cherish our Christmas memories, traditions and family. Merry Christmas in heaven Bama and Papa! We are so blessed.

Once an angel, always an angel - Angel Grandma

She was my first childhood memory ... my fondest childhood memories ... my children's fondest memories ... my best friend ... my biggest fan. Now she is reunited with her sweetheart, her Mom, Dad and brother. She said it best when she had a clear moment back in November when Jaley, my sister Cara and I were visiting ... "We didn't waste any time having fun." Miles separated us when we moved to Colorado ... now you will be forever with us - miles will never separate us again. Until we meet again.

I love you Bama, Grandma, Grammar - bestest friend.

Feeling grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful example and friend.

2013 Code for Christmas has been released!!!

The code has been released!

For those of you wondering what I'm talking about, here's the scoop:

For the past 5+ years we have put a number on the gifts for the kids instead of their names.  They have to crack the code to figure out who receives the gift.

About a week before Christmas we give the kids one clue each day about the code.  It drives them crazy!

One year the code was how many teeth they lost.

The numbers this year (and in no particular order) - 98, 06, 13, 37, 14, 24, 46, 56.  FYI - this year John, Jared and I have been included in on the numbers.

Dec 1 - Advent Activity

Have dinner with our Home Teaching and Visiting Teaching families.

We invited the families we Home Teach and Visit Teach to our home for dinner.  It was wonderful to be together.  It was fun to have the home decorated - it was festive!

12 foot tree with the ornaments I have painted of the years
... I just got my sister, Cara, addicted to painting too!

Family Memory Tree - with our yearly memory ornaments

My Grandma's (Bama) favorite tree.
Each year she would give me a new ornament to hang on the tree

The tree in our eating area - sweets tree

I love the picture of Santa looking at the nativity

I love Christmas a little

My nephew-in-law was counting how many trees I had and got up to 44 and realized that
he forgot to count some trees in rooms he already counted.  I love trees.  I love nativities.
I love Christmas

Menu for tonight:
Soup.  Salad.  Rolls/Bread/Biscuits.  Dessert.

19 people total (We missed having 2 other families over - that would have been 10 more).

My favorite soups I made:
Beef Picante
1 cheap roast
1 lg jar of picante sauce (any brand)  - 16 oz - 24 oz
1 jar of water (the same amount of salsa you put in)
4-5 cans of chili beans (I pressure cook 3 cups dry kidney beans and add chili powder)
Onion - chopped (if you want)
Cook in crock pot until meat shreds (at least 4 hours on high).
I pressure cook this recipe (meat too).

Chicken Pot Pie Soup/Stew - from Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant ... homemade is even better!
This recipe may seem long, but you can combine steps (or cook items at same time in different pans) ... FYI - You don't want to overcook the potatoes.
Yields:  1 gallon

Ingredients:
8 cups water
1 1/4 lbs 3/4" cubed red potatoes
1 lb raw chicken breast cut into bite size pieces
2 tbsp canola oil (to sauté  veggies)
3/4 lb carrots - 1/4" sliced
1/2 lb celery - 1/4" sliced
1/2 lb pearl onions (remove skins according to instructions)
2 1/2 tsp dried thyme
1/2 lb margarine or butter
1 TBSP garlic - finely minced
3/4 cup flour
5 cups chicken broth
2 1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp white pepper
1/4 tsp black pepper
2 1/2 cups whole milk
1 1/4 cups heavy whipping cream
1/4 lb peas (frozen)

1.  In a large pot bring the water to a rapid boil.  Place potatoes in the water and cook for 10 minutes or until tender. Drain potatoes (place in ice bath and set aside for later ... I just drained them and set them aside)
2.  Saute oil, carrots, celery, onions and thyme over medium heat for 10 min (or until tender).  Set aside for later.
3.  In 5 quart pot melt margarine/butter.  Add garlic and saute over medium heat for 2 min.
4.  Set heat to low and add in flour - stirring constantly.
5.  Whisk in broth, salt and white and black pepper.  Bring up the heat to medium and simmer for 5 minutes until mixture has thickened - stirring constantly.
6.  Slowly stir in milk and cream.  Simmer for 3 minutes.
7.  Add peas, parsley, cooked potatoes, cooked vegetable mixture and chicken. Stir and bring soup to desired temperature.
8. Enjoy with a side of Butter milk Biscuits!

Be the Anchor

We have been listening to some CD's that my sister-in-law, Brooke, made for our family reunion this year.  She asked that each person submit their favorite song.  As we drove to different events, we would listen and guess whose favorite song it was.

We have some new favorites!

Kerst was listening to Cara's favorite (Anchor by Mindy Gledhill) and said, "I want to be that person someday. The anchor."

I thought that was so sweet.

We all need an anchor.  I'm glad I have one too.

To Be Bold

When my 8 year old niece, Emma, stayed with me this summer for a couple of weeks, you would think she was quite bold.  She would ask Merrick, Jenna's boyfriend, why he wore certain things (tank tops), why he had hair under his arms.  He would just smile and answer her questions.

She'd ask him to watch a Barbie movie with her.  "Of course!" he would say and would head to the theater in our basement and watch the movie with Jenna, Emma, Brooklynn and Jaley.  Emma and Brooklynn would ask Merrick to read a Disney Princess book to them.  "Of course!" was his reply with a smile on his face.  They'd all sit on the couch together as Merrick would read to them.

Emma nonchalantly asked Merrick one day if he would go to church with her.  "Of course!" he told her.

Sure enough he went to church with Emma (and us).

I teased my sister, Cara, that Emma should ask Merrick if he would be baptized.  He'd probably smile and say, "Of course!"

A week or so ago I asked Merrick if he wanted to take the missionary discussions.  "Of course!" he answered.

Tonight was the third discussion.  It was a neat experience - all of the lessons have been quite amazing.  The elders (Elder King and Elder Gentry) asked Merrick if he wanted to be baptized.  "Of course!" was his reply.

The date is set for Aug 25.  We have a time table to work out since Jenna is moving to UT on Aug 19.

We are thrilled!  He is a super sweet young man.  He knows our standards and is learning our beliefs.  As a Mom, I appreciate how he respects Jenna and follows our standards.

Thanks Emma for being bold.  For showing me that it is OK to come right out and ask questions.  To invite.  He was just politely waiting for the invitation so he could reply "Of course!"

News article featuring Jenna

I found the high school student newspaper on the floor in Jaley's room and saw this article.  I didn't even know!

It was neat to read Jenna's insight, thoughts and feelings.

She did take that challenge head on and left many people changed for the better.

On the same note ... this public service announcement is powerful.

Jaley's Dream

Jaley has told me several times that she has a dream that she goes to the orthodontist and he says "let's take those off today."

I think it's really cute.

Today her dream came true.

She has had her jaw popping more recently. Yesterday when she told me, I immediately called the office to tell them (Dr. R asked me to let him know when it happens). The office told me they could see her this morning at 9:00 to check and see what is going on.

When Dr. R told her his plan, she looked up dazed and said, "What?"

It was really cute.

They took them off ... she looks gorgeous.

On the way home she said she was afraid she will wake up and discover it was all a dream.  She needed to be pinched.

50 miler

Kerst and John left on June 24 for the 50 mile backpacking trip in the mountains with the boy scouts.

Do remember the flu I caught and had while taking pictures of my niece's wedding?

John caught it.  The first evening.

Their 50 miler ended up being less ... and only 2 days long instead of 6.  I rescued them on the second day.

There will be another opportunity in two years for another 50 miler.

Kerst is doing a 14er camp out next weekend.

I'm their favorite

In our childhood home the girls sat on one side of the table, the boys on the other.

The girls sat next to the counter and cabinets.  In these cabinets, my sister Cara would hide her unwanted peas.  They weren't discovered for a long time.

We still joke about it to this day.

I have had the opportunity to have two of Cara's girls staying with us for several weeks this summer.

And boy have I spoiled them!!!

Better eat them up before your Mom comes back!

I'm now the favorite aunt!!!

Mine or hers?

My sister is in the process of moving and has been able to stay with me off and on over the past month.  During that time I have been teaching her how to paint - Christmas Ornaments.

She picked up on the techniques so quickly!  You can't tell which are mine and which are hers.

I can't wait to see her finished tree after she paints the ornaments her husband has been cutting out for her.

We painted 9 sets of ornaments so far - 6 of each (3 for me, 3 for her).
As if my tree doesn't have enough - you can never have too many ornaments!

50 mile backpacking trip - or not

The flu I had this past weekend was caught by my sweetheart.

I had it while taking wedding photos.

He caught it on the evening of the first day of the 50 mile backpacking trip in the mountains with our 12 year old, Kerst, and his scout troop.

I had to go rescue him (and Kerst).

He wins.

My Niece - married

My beautiful niece got married this past weekend .... and she asked me to take the pictures (I am NOT a professional).

I think they turned out well ... considering the sun was not in the right position at the time we took photos but we had to do what we had to do

and I don't have the best camera ...

and I was throwing up in the bushes (I came down with some kind of bug the morning of the wedding)

Oh the stories Jenny can share about her wedding ... and the photographer.

Another countdown

Kendall woke up this morning and told me he had only 364 days until his birthday.

Kendall's spotlight

They are spotlighting Kendall in Primary for his 7th Birthday.

Kendall 4 months old

Here is the story I sent in to share about Kendall:
Kendall has always had a love for saying prayers.  For the past several years he has monopolized every family prayer we say.  If someone else in our family gets to say the prayer it is because he is not around to insist on saying it.  It is a known fact in Kendall's extended family that if you need to be prayed for, make sure you get on Kendall's pray list because the temple prayer roll is for 2 weeks.  Kendall's prayer roll is FOREVER!

For over three years he has been praying for a growing list of people starting with his Aunt Gretchen who was battling cancer.  Last August when he found out about Brother B...n's cancer, he immediately started praying for him and now prays for Sister B...n to feel loved and protected.  He prays for the B...walters and Brother B....sen as well.  During our trip to Chicago last weekend for his Great Grandfather's funeral, we stopped off to visit our old neighborhood.  One of our neighbors was out.  It was someone Kendall had been praying for but never met (he was 18 months when we moved).  His smile was so sweet when Mrs. C......ro told him thank you for praying for her recovery from a serious car accident.

Sometimes his prayer includes a conversation with us by asking questions to make sure he hasn't left anyone out or he requests more information regarding what he is praying about.  I can imagine that is how we were taught to pray and talk with our Heavenly Father in the pre-existence.  Our Heavenly Father wants us to have a personal relationship with him so that we can carry on a two-way conversation just as Kendall does with us during some of his prayers.

Excited - the countdown

Kendall has been counting down to how many days left until his birthday.

At first he started asking me to figure out how many days.  That is when I explained to him how many days were in the month.  He would subtract that from the date and add 19 (for June).

Saturday he told me that he has been waiting 361 days for his birthday to arrive.

He makes me smile.

2006 Father's Day Memory

June 18, 2006

I was in the hospital being monitored on Father's Day ~ Kendall arrived the next day (8 weeks premature).

I called home to check on everyone (micro-managing from the hospital bed). I had Jaley go downstairs and I walked her through making homemade waffles.   Kerst cracked the eggs, Jenna made the orange juice.   Julia arrived a bit later and made easy over eggs for everyone to add some protein to their breakfast.

The kids put the phone on speaker phone. I was able to hear all of their busy activity and was able to imagine what was going on...the mess, the excitement, etc.   John was upstairs preparing a lesson for his Sunday School class for that afternoon. He heard it all and was loving every minute of it.

I was placed in the middle of the table (speakerphone) and enjoyed breakfast with them.   Kerst offered the prayer. I started to cry as I heard him pray that I would be safe and that the baby would be too. Prayers are answered. Angels do watch over these little ones.

It was an amazing experience. Probably the best Father's Day ever.

Happy Father's Day 2013 to my amazing husband ...

Summer routine

It is nice to finally be in summer .... a new routine.

Signs of summer:
Kerst marked all of the recipes he wants to make this summer (desserts).
This is one of my all-time favorite cookbooks that our family
put together during our 2009 family reunion.

Reading Kerst and Kendall are doing for the Library reading program

Chore charts
Ah yes, the glorious chore chart for the 3 kids in the house at the moment (never fear, Jenna will be home on Saturday and will have a chart next week!)

This year I am giving them a list of items to do around the house and for themselves.  They have one week to complete them all.  Some chores are to be done daily (reading), others are a couple of times a week (dusting, mopping, yard work, vacuuming, blinds, baseboards), others are by time (working on merit badge for scouts - five 30 minute boxes that can be completed in one or several sittings) and others just have to be done before the deadline of Friday at noon (cook, laundry, clean room, clean bathroom, dig out a tree stump just to name a few).  I have a list of chores that I keep adding to that I will use throughout the summer.  Some chores will be repeated weekly, others will rotate (dusting chairs, baseboards).

When the chores are completed (and checked by me) and marked off by noon on Friday, I will take them out for a treat - ice cream, icee, Walgreens trip, etc.  If they aren't, too bad .... they still have to do the chores and they miss out on the outing/treat.

He's old

I am filling out John's physical form that he needs for the 50 mile backpacking trip he is taking with Kerst at the end of the month with the Boy Scouts (yes, you read that correctly - 50 mile backpacking trip).

I had to write down his age, but couldn't remember.

"How old is Dad?"

Kendall - "46.  He's old."

The Relatives Came

My Mom sent this book to the relatives the put up with us, housed us, fed us, hugged us and cried with us during our trip to Chicago for Papa's memorial.

It is a sweet book.

I smiled through it all (and had some chuckles)... we hug and hug (and shed tears), we talked for hours, ate all their food, we happily slept anywhere and we thought of them when we were traveling there and when we left.

I am so blessed to have such amazing family.

Dog Talk

We were able to stop in and visit some sweet neighbors when we were back in Chicago at the beginning of June.

Ms. Marie and Mr. Dave have two dogs - yorkies.

Callie was sitting on the couch with us and Ms. Marie was talking to her and asked her what she thought of how big the kids had gotten.

Kendall looked at Callie, waited and then told Ms. Marie, "She's not talking back."

They go a long way back

I was her first best friend.  I cried whenever Bama and Papa would fly back to their home after a two week stay with our family while I was growing up.

The tradition continued.  Jaley took over as the young best friend.

At an early age they had a special connection.

And it is a mutual love ...

One that will span through the eternities.

Remembering ... is a painful process

These are the stages Jaley went through on Saturday at Grandpa's Memorial.  The stages she went through with her Great Grandma.

She was thrilled to be reunited with her childhood BFF.  They were (and are) best friends.  Growing up, Jaley couldn't say the "G" sound.  It came out as a "B".  Grandma became Bama.  It has stuck.  For years.

Jaley soon realized that her Bama didn't recognize her.  Tears flowed for a long time - and mine started when I saw her struggle with this.  Dementia is a horrible thing on everyone.

Through the memorial service Jaley held her Bama's hand.   Just the simple, loving holding of hands was comforting to her.  She didn't want to let go. Ever.

After the memorial service we went to the hallways where everyone greeted Grandma again and gave her hugs.  This is where Bama caught a glimpse of the young girl that did weekly visits, numerous sleepovers, millions of tea parties, walks and makeup parties.  She told Jaley how beautiful she was. Jaley beamed through her tears.  So grateful for the moments of clarity.  Bama remembers ... the grown up faces are hard to place.

Papa's Memorial

It was a sweet moment - and a sad moment.   So wonderful to have family from the T and P side there to celebrate Gpa.

I took photos (yes, in the chapel - shame on me, so kick me out).   It was sweet to see my uncle Keith give Gma a kiss and tease her.

It was tender to see my Dad with Gma talking to her and then leaning over with tears running down his cheek while leaning on her shoulder.

And then the reunion of Jaley's childhood best friend.  She missed seeing her Bama.

It was heart wrenching to see Jaley realize that her Gma didn't remember her.  Dementia is a horrible disease on everyone.   They were best friends ever since she was an infant and remained that way for over 10 years (with nearly 8 years of constant visits due to living so close).   So many fun times they had (sleepovers, play dates, tea parties, make up parties .... exactly what I did with her when I was growing up!!).

The tears flowed with this realization ... and didn't stop for a long time.

Jaley sat by Bama the entire time and held her hand through most of the memorial service.

Gma remembers the memories, but the grown up faces are hard for her to place.

How wonderful it felt to hear Gma say, "Ahhhh, John!" when he walked up.   Some faces never change, and his was one that didn't need a memory boost for her.

The military presented a flag to Gma.

I took pictures - the angle was difficult from where I was standing outside.   It was still so very moving.

They played Taps for Gpa

My brother, Richard, gave a moving tribute and talk about Gramps, grandparenting and our own Gethsemane.

He then sang a beautiful hymn, Where Can I turn for Peace (one of Gramps' favorite hymns and it is Richard's favorite as well).

My Dad gave a wonderful eulogy and tribute as well.

Kerst and Jenna sang a duet, I Know that My Redeemer Lives.   I have that audio as well.

President Kenneth Robinson spoke as well.

President Robinson after the service
He is a good friend of Gma and Gpa's and the former Chicago temple president.   He would visit Papa weekly and bring him a chocolate covered donut with hot chocolate.  They also made trips to Wendy's for their chili.  I loved how he used the imagery of a ship  - Just as we stand on the shore and watch the ship with loved ones sail over the horizon and we say "there he goes," others on the other side of the horizon say "here he comes" and he is greeted with tears of joy.

Afterwards we gathered in the foyer for pictures.   It was fun to see the kids shake hands and tell Gma who they were.

Jenna knelt down next to Gma and talked to her and then you hear "Aahhh, Jenna!"   ... her memory came back.

Jaley was there with a glimmer of hope her childhood best friend would remember.   She saw Jaley and told Jaley how beautiful she was.   She beamed through her flood of tears.

Viewpoint from my Mom:
Grandma would comment on all of the little boys....years ago it was all of the little girls.

The grandchildren flocked to greet her.   It was touching.

The boys, Kerst, Max, Kendall, RIV, Carlisle, and Sam were close to the front.   Many boys flanking her on the right and girls on the left.   Sweet Jaley was right next to her.   When the Air Force did the flag presentation, you could hear a pin drop.   Their presence and bearing was electric.   When they folded the flag, you could HEAR the fabric snap.   They were erect, wore impressive uniforms including white gloves.   Sharp, crisp, serene.

From where I was sitting, I could see the organist, Clayton Waite, an elderly man who was at his post at the organ, crying his eyes out.   The taps were played and the sound seemed to echo in my mind as the other soldier stood in front of Grandma with the freshly folded flag.

The flag presentation was before the service began.   Bishop Wright opened the service with a lovely teary prayer by Corin, then we sang America.   Perfect after the military presentation which was scheduled to be after the closing prayer, but the military men had another obligation 30 minutes away.   So Bishop Wright consulted Dad and the change was made to before the Service began.   The Stake President had given permission to do the flag part in the chapel because of Grandma's frail condition.   The taps was played outside by the open door.

The talks were great.   Richard's was very personal and tender...Dad was to do the Eulogy with a couple of personal touches.   He wrote it on Wed, Typed on Thurs and practiced on Friday....He sat in Gramps old car to practice.   and on his bed and on his chair....He didn't want to read it .   President Robinson's ...well what can you say about a former temple presidents talk.

Gramps had requested that Richard sing ...he came through...very solid yet touching...what a proud mommy I was!

Kerst and Jenna...beautiful

Grandma made it...that was great and kind iffy that she would be up to it.   But she did.

So wonderful to feel everyone's support.
